Celebrating International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015, on 09 October at 42 BachDang Street, Danang , Climate Change Network Central (CCN ) in coordination with the network members organized a media event with the topic " Knowledge for Life " .

Climate change is a problem concerned by many people and impacts strongly on a global scale. These natural disasters and extreme weather have been increasing complexly and more dangerously. Over the last years, many parts of the world have been suffering from natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, droughts and extreme climate damaged to human live. In coping with the situation, the community especially the vulnerable communities need to have experiences and be equipped with the basic knowledge to adapt to the impacts of natural disasters and climate change.

The context of the event

Celebrating International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015, on 09 October  at 42 Bach Dang Street , Danang , Climate Change Network Central (CCN) with the members held a media event with the topic "Knowledge for Life" for sharing experiences and raising public awareness about the importance of risk mitigation of natural disasters. Consultative and Research Center on Natural Resources Management (CORENARM) as the network members joined this event .

Opening the event, Mr. Le Duy Vong - Director of Center for  Disaster Risk Reduction in Danang- emphasized that "Disaster prevention, adaptation to climate change is extremely important to increasingly complicated and  extreme weather phenomena. The leadership in Danang are considered this as one of the centered-tasks reviewed and strengthened". He hopes that the event will help the organizations, local authorities and communities interacting, learning, sharing much more useful information, especially from the actual experience and knowledge to raise the public awareness about the importance of risk mitigation of natural disasters.

The event attracted more than 100 delegates who are the representatives of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, Department of Disaster Prevention Central and Highland Central and local departments; Danang People's Committee; community groups in the project, Center for Rural Development in Central (CRD), Nordic Assistance to Vietnam (NAV), Malteser International, Centre for Sustainable Rural Development (SRD) , especially the presence of media agencies.

The message that the program was spread effectively with the active participation of community groups in the photo exhibition and storytelling competition; agricultural products shows , documents which communities collected from the real experiences , the way to reduce disaster risk  and adapt to climate change

The outstanding of the event was the media competition and community-based initiatives to raise awareness of disaster risk management and climate change and recognizes the contribution of knowledge, local experiences and mobilize community’s participation like foundation to provide knowledge for human life in the context of climate change as well.
 
The contests were very effervescent with 11 media items and initiatives to impress on the public strongly. In the event, many unique and highly- applicable ideas were represented by community groups through the small models in order to mitigate the risks of natural disasters. Especially, the noticeable initiatives were performed by the vulnerable community groups.

Finally, the organizers have chosen two first - prizes, two second - prizes and two third - prizes for the best works in the contest. The event in term of celebration of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015 brought a comprehensive and colorful picture presenting the knowledge related to disaster risk reduction and climate change. Hopefully, after the event each attendant especially the vulnerable community groups in society will be equipped themselves with the knowledge and experience needed to take the initiative and actively than in the prevention of disaster risk reduction.
